The Little Labs Voice of God was originally designed to capture the chest resonance of vocalists or voice over artists, enabling them to still have a proximity type effect without having to be so close to the mic, hence the name, VOG, or Voice of God. However, when it was heard it on kick drum and bass, it became clear this would be the go to device to make these instruments sound huge.

Technically, the VOG is a resonant high-pass filter with a super-high Q resonance
that can be swept from 20 to 200 Hz. Only a couple of very expensive commercial equalizers can create a resonant peak with this high of a Q, and none do it as cleanly with a pure straight wire approach utilizing a single active component. As you increase the resonance peak amplitude, everything below that frequency drops off at up to 24dB per octave, effectively boosting and cutting simultaneously. The razor-thin resonant peak (extremely high Q) with a super steep high-pass roll-off, a straight-wire single amplifier in the audio path, and super-simple controls make the VOG a BEAST.

Circuit Topology
The VOG uses a unique proprietary circuitry Jonathan Little (Little Labs founder,
me) discovered by accident. He created an unheard-of high Q resonance for a
single active stage using a single amplifier stage and passive component. The
VOG is fully differential from input to output, which means it never unbalances the signal. This fully differential circuit topology also has the bonus of being capable of running unbalanced in stereo!

The VOG lets users sweep a sharp peak resonance from 20 to 300 Hz, while anything below the peak is rolled off at a steep -24dB per octave. This lets users focus on the low end they want, while eliminating low-end mush and unnecessary woofer excursion.

A subharmonic can be the focus, or the fundamental, or upper harmonics. On a kick drum, for example, the overall effect of turning VOGs frequency knob sounds like someone is tightening or loosening the drumhead. In a mix, VOG allows users to place the bass spectrum instruments so they do not interfere or get in the way of each other.

Ideal Applications
Massive kick drums. The famous 808 kick is easily taken to another level of huge. Toms can be tuned using the VOG, like tightening or loosening the drum head. Shifting the low end between instruments so they fit better together in the mix is a lesser-known but powerful use of the VOG. Tympani on a stereo recording. Tympani often gets lost in classical music, which the VOG can bring up without affecting the rest of the balance of the orchestra. Of course, voiceover work, what the VOG was originally designed for.
